Alastaire Dick is the Director of the Mining Program, Sunshine for Mines, at Rocky Mountain Institute. Before joining RMI, Alastaire was the Group Energy Specialist for Gold Fields Limited responsible for guiding the Gold Fields group in energy security planning (including renewables), energy efficiency, and carbon emissions reduction. Alastaire has previous experience as a renewable energy program manager having worked in managing large-scale wind and solar PV programs. At the start of his working career he began working for the Energy Research Institute (now the Energy Research Centre) at the University of Cape Town and was involved with energy modeling that contributed to South Africas White Paper on Energy. He then joined Eskom (South Africas national electricity utility) as an engineer involved with flue gas cleaning and scrubbing. Much of his experience comes from the bulk materials, mining, and mineral beneficiation industries through various senior management and directorship roles. Alastaire has a Masters degree in Sustainable Energy Engineering from KTH (The Royal Institute of Technology) in Stockholm, Sweden, as well as a Masters in Business Administration and a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cape Town. He is a registered Project Management Professional (PMP) with the Project Management Institute (PMI). Alastaire is passionate about leadership, integrated thinking, and renewable energy. He enjoys playing music, woodwork, and is fluent in Xhosa (one of the local South African languages).
