MFE Magnesium For Europe GmbH was founded in 2021 to develop a clean, green and competitive primary Magnesium metal and by-product production in Europe on the basis of an actively mined and majority controlled dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate) deposit in Bosnia-Herzegovina, just 50km away from the current EU border. Magnesium is a critical and strategic raw material. MFE will be the only near term European producer of Magnesium offering European and US industry players an opportunity to reduce their complete dependence on Chinese producers. MFE is close to finalising the planning phase. Its targeted production process, the Aluminothermic process, converts dolomite into Magnesium, Precipitated Calcium Carbonate, Al-Mg-Spinel, and dry ice / liquid CO2 without waste. The process is using green energy only and the carbon footprint is less than 1mt CO2 per mt Magnesium, a >90% CO2 reduction compared to conventional Magnesium production using the Pidgeon process. MFE operates in Bosnia-Herzegovina through its wholly-owned subsidiary BH Magnezij & Minerali d.o.o. ("BH Magnezij"), ensuring close alignment with local market needs and regulations. An alternative German production site is also under consideration.
