Stephen McIntosh has more than 39 years of global experience in the resources sector, combining senior executive leadership, technical depth and governance experience across mining, technology and energy transition portfolios. 

He spent 33 years with the Rio Tinto Group, culminating in the role of Group Executive, Growth & Innovation. In that role, he was accountable for most of Rio Tinto’s global technical functions, including exploration, studies, construction, technical services, information technology, data science, robotics and automation, R&D, asset closure and, in his final year, the global Health, Safety, Environment and Security function. He previously held the role of global Head of Exploration.

He is now a senior advisor to EMR Capital, a private equity company focused on the resources sector, and provides strategic advisor to Andina Copper, Cobra Resources, Genesis Minerals and Rio Tinto. Until January 2026, he chaired Datarock Holdings, a computer vision AI/ML start-up focused on the resources sector, which was acquired by IMDEX; he continues to consult to IMDEX. He also works with Chalice Mining, chairing its project advisory committee as it advances the world-class Gonneville project through the study phases. He was a director of the Federal Government’s Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) until July 2026 and advises the Clean Energy Finance Corporation on its Rewiring the Nation portfolio.
