John Tivey is a Corporate Partner of White & Case based in Melbourne and is the Asia Pacific head of the Firm's global Mining and Metals Group. John has over 30 years' experience in the mining and metals sector as a projects and M&A lawyer, working principally for sponsors and sponsor consortiums.
He has advised sponsors on consortium arrangements, investment agreements with host governments (including fiscal stability arrangements), project development and cross border M&A transactions. John has worked in private practice and as in house counsel in the mining and metals sector which enables him to deliver sector specific guidance and solutions to clients. His various roles have taken him on expatriate postings in Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and Hong Kong and given him exposure to project acquisitions and investment reviews across the globe, including in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, India, Eritrea, Senegal, Zambia, Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mongolia, Peru, Brazil, the United States and Canada. [He has recently been at the forefront of transactions in the EV materials space, representing Syrah resources on the financing, development and offtake for its Vidalia graphite facility, Huayou Cobalt on the tripartite investment and joint venture with Vale and Ford to construct a USD3.5 billion HPAL facility in Indonesia and Peak Rare Earths in respect of its Ngualla rare earths project in Tanzania]
